The enchantment of Christmas in the historic center of Florence

Christmas draws a special frame in the historic center of Florence. The lights that color the streets crowded with people, the delicate scent of Christmas sweets that spreads through the alleys, the artfully made decorations that stand out on every corner, the markets that fill the crazy ones: all this gives the historic center an atmosphere fairytale and enchanted.

Let's find out what you absolutely can't miss if you visit Florence during Christmas.

Christmas markets and the charm of tradition

Still haven't found the gift you want for your loved ones? Are you looking for the right decorations for your Christmas tree? Or do you just want to try an unprecedented culinary experience? Well, in Florence there are the markets that will help you make your Christmas truly unforgettable, which you can find already from the first days of November. The great classic is the Christmas market in Piazza Santa Croce, counted by international guides among the unmissable markets of all Italy. Officially named Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt, it ensures a rich selection of pretzels, strudels, mulled wine and lots of handicrafts on display from Northern Europe. Inevitable the house of Santa Claus and numerous initiatives aimed at children scattered throughout the square. Equally popular is the Christmas Bazaar, known to most as an American Christmas market, host of an exceptional location: we are talking about the Horticultural Garden, the evocative nineteenth-century greenhouse that hosts the signed market of the Ailo Association - The American International League of Florence ODV. Precisely, the place designated to host it will be the Tepidarium del Roster, tested for the first time last Christmas and confirmed also this year, given the huge turnout of registered public. From brownies to vintage clothes, through toys and various objects, this Christmas market reaches its forty-fourth edition this year. The proceeds from the sales are entirely donated to local voluntary associations. Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December the unmissable appointment is fixed with the La Fierucola dell'Immacolata, a market in Piazza SS. Annunziata who brings local producers to the streets. Spaces therefore to zero kilometer products, handmade handicraft products and to voluntary associations. Under the loggia, weaving and game-building workshops are planned, open to children and adults.

Visit the cribs, touch the magic of Christmas

The cribs found in some squares of the historic center of Florence will offer your eyes an unforgettable show. At the Rivoli Boutique Hotel the nativity scenes of the artist Claudio Ladurini are on display, which has met with great public success in past editions. The exhibition, aimed at collecting donations in favor of the Tommasino Bacciotti Foundation, is free of charge and can be visited from December 8th 2019 until January 6th 2020. Each crib contains a story, imprisoning an enchanting atmosphere to be enjoyed to the fullest. The installation of the unmissable Santa Claus Village is signed by Salvo Sciuto.

The ride of the Magi

To celebrate Epiphany day, Monday 6 January 2020, the work of Santa Maria del Fiore organizes the historical re-enactment of the Cavalcade of the Magi in Florence. Having arrived this year at the XXIII edition of the modern era, the Cavalcade of the Magi was born to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the laying of the first stone of the Cathedral and of the Opera Foundation. The procession, made up of 700 participants, led by the Three Wise Men on horseback, will depart from Piazza Pitti at 2 pm, winding through all the streets of the historic center of Florence and arriving in Piazza Duomo at 3.30 pm, where the colubrina will break out. Once done, the Magi will lay their gifts at the foot of the living crib.

Pitti Fashion Week and the inauguration of winter sale

Once the holidays are over, a four-day international fashion show arrives in Florence. In fact, from 7 to 10 January 2020, the Pitti Uomo event will be held, bringing to Florence the most important names in the menswear and contemporary lifestyle sectors. What better way to leave the Christmas season behind than to attend Pitti Uomo? Anticipate trends, participate in Pitti Fashion Week 2020.
